MY ROYAL OBSESSION

I've got a confession. I love the Royal family. Well, not really, but I love the pomp and circumstance, the ceremony and the tradition. It's fun, it's British and there's often an excuse to dress up or throw a party. These are good things. If you need any more evidence I direct you towards The Queen, a woman who is always perfectly turned out, owns corgis and is utterly decorous, amazing considering some of the twits surrounding her. 

With the Royal Wedding coming up I have been busier than ever with my Royal collecting (I already collect anything with the Queen on - tins, cups, mirrors, money (ha!) etc) so that everything looks perfect and vintage kitsch for the 'do' (please don't rain). I found these masks the other day in a party shop in Taunton and they represent perhaps the best £9.97 I've ever spent in my life. Hours of fun. Expect more elaborate scene set ups nearer the big day. Do you think I'll get arrested if I do a photoshoot in front of Buckingham Palace in these?

I normally throw the kitchen sink at my outfits, but I love how these women (and Joanna Hillman x 2) add that one amazing item. I am on the lookout for standout pieces that do the talking, so the rest doesn't have to.

I've never been a massive The Gossip fan, I can take or leave them. But this song makes me want to go out and dance all night in ridiculously high heels. 

Sartorial Jump For Joy

I've been in New York for a long weekend. Dressing for snowy weather is hard. The grit and salt trash your shoes so it's sensible to opt for waterproof or heavy duty footwear. You get cold so you want to wear many layers as possible and preferably lots of wool. I end up looking like a bulky farmer when everyone else manages to appear chic instead. 

I have been trying to use The Sartorialist as my guide.

Jeremy Scott A/W 10 - now THAT'S a belt buckle...

Jeremy Scott is hardly the most commercial of all the designers in the world - I noticed quite a lot of his Flintstones inspired summer collection in the sale section of more than one designer retail website. That's not a criticism, it's just that in a world like fashion there is  often very little space for real humour. How many people have you ever seen (whisper it) laughing on Bond Street, Sloane Street or Madison Avenue? 


I love these belts / flat friends / props / whatever. Am already ticking over ideas for Halloween...

Friday Inspiration

Like the rest of the world, I love Garance Dore's blog and her photos of the amazing and stylish women she meets. This is probably my favourite of all time. Hair, bomber jacket, leather pants (I die) and shoes. All perfect.

When I read this I almost wet myself. I wonder if he ever found his soul mate? 

Moschino Obsession

There are some brands that take their heritage very seriously. I personally think Karl Lagerfeld is a MUCH better designer when working for the house of Chanel than when working for Fendi or his own label. When he has the tweed, the skirt suits, jersey and gilt chains to work with his natural wit shines. 


Moschino is a label that every now and then creates something glorious, but often misses the mark. The brand is known for it's playful character but I think something gets lost because of a lack of coherence. The punchline takes over from the design if you know what I mean. But not this A/W 10 season, like the S/S 10 before it, almost every look was perfect. Why? Because they had played with what Moschino once was - a brand that defined the 80's in many ways. They replicated many of the top hits and for some reason it really works right now...this is what Moschino is. 


And of course, somewhere behind the scenes ADR is helping out. I die. 

Snaps of the snake shoot

If you've read this blog before you'll know I was shattered on Saturday because I'd been on my first ever fashion shoot - part of a course I'm doing in Beginner's Fashion Styling at Central St Martins. I signed up for the course on a whim (I'm well into adult education at the moment, it's soooo great!) because it was a side of the industry that I'd love to know more about - the processes, the theory and the actual flexing of one's fashion muscles. I couldn't have hoped for more as the whole 5 weeks have been brilliant. I've learnt so much, been pushed to be much more aware of my presentation and I get to talk fashion for a whole day a week. 

These are some snaps that I took on the day of the shoot, the professional photos are truly amazing, but these give you a taste of what we were doing without revealing the final story before our course tutor gives us his opinion (scary). This wasn't a nice commercial fashion shoot, but a chance to try out something much more editorial. My group made all our clothes from charity shop finds painted to make them into a suitable canvas for our projected images. I am so happy with the final results and very proud of all our hard work...I hope you like it too x

Beyonce does it again

I have already posted twice in the past about Beyonce. More specifically about Beyonce and her Bettie Page look and how much her bangs blow my mind. So, I am crying, CRYING with delight at the visual feast she is given us with her new video. Beyonce, you and me can run away Gaga style any time you want.

The Newcastle Bocca Della Verita. Who needs Rome?

Without a doubt, this is my favourite thing in Newcastle. Tucked away in a corner of Monument Station on the Metro is the Bocca Della Verita fortune telling machine. Unlike the actual thing in Rome (which I've also visited) this one is plastic, grubby and costs 20p. But for that 20p you put your hand inside the mouth and it tells you your fortune on a flimsy bit of printed paper rather than biting your hand off. Awesome. 


Whenever I go to Newcastle this is a must, along with the posh Marks & Spencer's and the new Topshop that is always spookily empty compared to London ones (but very relaxing to shop in as a result) and the T.K.Maxx that normally coughs up some Missoni in some shape or form. See, like I said, who needs Rome?
