MOROCCAN DOLLS

My favourite museum in Paris, one that I only discovered a couple of years ago, is definitely the Musee du quai Branly. I can't remember the precise use of these dolls, but it was something to do with crime & punishment. I wonder what these people did wrong?

NEW T SHIRT

I got home the other day to a lovely surprise. Why? Because the thrill of a fabulously wrapped package on the doormat really is hard to beat. My friend had sent me one her creations - an illustration screen printed onto a t shirt which I promptly wore to work the next day. I love it so much and the man is suitably creepy for my tastes.

Check out Eliza's blog if you want to become really jealous of all the amazing charity shop oddities she finds (as well as see her screen prints and random inspirations). You won't regret it, unless of course you passed up the opportunity to buy some of the items in question, in which case, EPIC FAIL.

SUMMER EXHIBITION

I went to the Royal Academy to see the Summer Exhibition today. Didn't buy any art, but did manage to prevent my Dad from buying any more naked women to put on the walls (as per my Mother's orders). Did spend £21 on two glasses of champagne. They clearly saw me coming, didn't they?

FRIDA KAHLO T SHIRT

I went to an all girls comp school in Lewisham, where we were very lucky to have an incredibly charismatic and enthusiastic art teacher who I will remember forever. Her passion for her subject made art a school favourite because you got to do all sorts of cool things like design your perfect bedroom out of the Ikea catalogue or run across the floor with paint on your feet.

The best thing about this art teacher however, was when she took the school assembly and kept 500 girls from South East London quiet for 15 minutes, with tales ranging from her family life to the inspiring lives of female artists. Finding out about the complex, creative figure that was Frida Kahlo was a watershed moment for me at the age of 14 or 15, and then when someone told me that Madonna was her biggest collector I was totally sold (this was back when Madonna was still totally ace, rather than alright).

I was totally sold again,a few weeks ago, when I saw this t shirt from a small range of different prints all featuring Frida. Teenage fan-girl meets her idol. Cher-ching.

Melbourne Street Art

Melbourne is well known as a hub of street art. Across the road from the ACMI and the Ian Potter Centre is a street at serves as an outdoor art / statement arena - there are many other places to go, but there is something interesting about the opposition of the formal art on one side of the street and the 'underground' stuff on the other. On the day we took a shortcut down this alley there was even someone there in broad daylight with a step ladder working on a new piece. It's forever changing as visiting street artists from around the world come to put their mark down for a while. In London you tend to get the odd Banksy but to have entire streets just laced with different works brings a new scale to the proceedings. On the whole I can't say I'm mad about graffiti, for me it's filed in the same category as Manga or RPG's - why would you want to spend your time obsessing over these things when there are shoes, films and food? But the alleys in Melbourne's CBD and Fitzroy are always fun to explore when I'm over. I'm especially loving the pink kangaroo!
