SHOE PAIN

I love these Stubbs & Wootton slippers but they are a bitch to wear in. I can handle if for about 3 hours before I start to limp and then after 6 hours I can stand it no longer.

How do you wear in shoes (other than the abject pain and misery route of just wearing them)? Please. Answers would be helpful!

Sometimes I smear the insides with Vaseline to prevent the friction or wear thick socks and walk around the house in them. I have to admit that the majority of my shoes I do not wear are because they have crippled me once or twice and I can't face the pain again. I start getting flash backs to 1992 and the Dr Marten boots of my youth (a.k.a. the heel shredder), truly something I never want to repeat. It takes a rare pair of shoes to feel comfortable first time on and brand or expense don't tend to be the most reliable barometer in my experience.

A MEETING OF MINDS

Last week I had a very important meeting and getting dressed for it caused a total headache. What should you wear when you're trying to convince a fashion company that you know what you're talking about when it comes to your industry without looking too try hard, but at the same time letting them know you understand their business and can represent their best interests?

I'd already worn the trousers and blazer during the week, so they got the vote from my friends as something I genuinely wear that they felt made a statement without screaming "me, me, me". Then it was just a professional looking shirt, boots I could walk in and a bag big enough to pop the presentation in - plus a swanky notebook I've been saving for just such a fashion forward occasion.

VELVET SLIPPERS FROM STUBBS & WOOTTON

Spring. The time of year when I can start wearing flats without socks. And yet again my attention turns to velvet slippers. These babies just aren't getting old for me - the twin associations of age and extreme wealth make them an item I love playing with.

The Row went for velvet slippers with masculine tailoring. Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen are clearly doing something rights, because any outfit on the catwalk that brings to mind Frida Kahlo is okay by me. I love how luxe and powerful this look is. If women dressed like this we would totally rule the world.

And then Tommy Ton for Style.com - the crested velvet slipper - we're getting into old English families who 'keep' houses rather than own them. But I'm common as muck, so this isn't an option for me.

So thank you Man Repeller, for reminding me that anything the UK can do, the USA can do, if not better, then really bloody different. Sod crests in the New World. We're going to put men with maracas on ours. We're filthy rich with a sense of humour.

I'd never heard of Stubbs & Wootton - we don't have it in the UK, and a quick glance at the website convinced me that if I went into any one of the physical stores in the US I may be tempted to a go a bit Michael Douglas on the average clientele, but you have to admit they do a nice line in tapestry / velvet slippers...

Nite n Day  - my personal favourites

All nice, huh?

But then to stop me in my tracks and remind me just why I hate obnoxious rich collegiate types, and why I shouldn't buy velvet slippers even if I think I'm subverting them by taking them out of context, Stubbs & Wootton have thrown these into the works. The most singularly unpleasant pair of shoes I have ever seen, worn by people who must truly be the biggest assholes on the planet.
