Halloween Pt 3

I've been cooking all day for Halloween, but even so I still have to be dressed up to do it. Went for a simple witchy vibe with new pinny made by my Mum. I picked up the cat print fabric at The City Quilter in New York and was hoping that might make a Halloween quilt (how cool would that be?), sadly she told me in no uncertain terms that this would never happen, but made this instead as a surprise.

And my pumpkins... Phew, my hands hurt after this - all bruised and red raw, but I think it was worth it.

Halloween Pt 2

I thought I knew what my Halloween costume was going to be, but visiting Beckerman Bite Plate I found inspiration beyond my wildest dreams. It has taken 3 hours effing and blinding as I attempted to sew thick quilted fabric onto a cardboard box, 3 snapped needles, 1 shattered craft knife and fingers still swollen from getting jabbed every couple of seconds, but I think it was worth it...I will be going as a Chanel Bag.

Halloween Pt 1

It's the day before Halloween, which means I'm listening to the Labyrinth soundtrack, the house is covered in Martha Stewart print outs and pumpkins are waiting to be carved  (waiting because I've misplaced the bloody carving implements). Whilst I undergo my preparations I thought it only proper to wear something appropriately spooky - I bought this dress in Topshop a couple of years ago because the print looks like a haunted wood and I can imagine Sleepy Hollow going on in the background somewhere. Wouldn't it be awesome if Johnny Depp came free with selected clothes?

Please also note my Halloween nails...I did them last night after the best part of a bottle of wine, so they are bit wonky. I used Barry M Instant Effects on the green nails and a black nail art pen to draw cobwebs on the orange. I tried to get my Mum to help with the right hand cobwebs, but sadly she was as squiffy as me. My family are all total lushes. FACT.

Too Many T-Shirts, Not Enough Jumpers

This summer I went a bit mad buying t-shirts. Rodarte, Christopher Kane, Acne, Something Else by Natalie Wood, American Apparel etc...These additions to my wardrobe are great, but now the weather is turning I am finding myself increasingly at a loss when it comes to dressing in the mornings. For the moment a cardie will suffice, but soon it's going to be time for a re-think - what will my winter staple be?

I usually just bulk buy Uniqlo merino wool or cashmere jumpers, but in my experience they don't last too well, they tend to bobble easily and look very tired by mid March. The hoodie option is out because it's not smart enough and any heavy knit jumper (cable knits etc) makes me look humungus because I have quite big boobs. Gah, dressing for the cold is a minefield.

After Dries Van Noten

I only realised after I'd taken these pictures that I was subconsciously paying 'tribute' to the A/W 2010 Dries Van Noten collection (pattern, military green, tailored harem pants etc). I have mentioned before just how much I love Dries Van Noten, and this particular collection was pretty much fashion perfection as far as I'm concerned. Dries Van Noten is great at designing unfussy, grown up clothes for women whose idol is more likely to be Katherine Hepburn than Marylin Monroe. I can say without hesitation that I would wear every piece - not something true of any other runway show in recent times.

Guardian Angel - Studded Toe Topshop Ankle Boots

Never one to deny myself, I hit the shops yesterday for a mini celebration (I'll tell you why later) and came away with what I have decided might be the perfect Autumn / Winter shoe from Topshop - the Angel studded toe suede boot. The heel is substantial without being high, they're slim enough to make pairing them with dresses or skirts smart and the dusky grey is perfect for the muted tones of the majority of my winter wardrobe. And then some genius went and added studs. SOLD.

Inez Van Lamsweerde in The Gentlewoman

I picked up The Gentlewoman magazine yesterday whilst I was browsing in WHSmith to escape the pouring rain of London town. The cover featured Inez Van Lamsweerde, fashion photographer and one half of the Dutch duo Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. Since speed reading the article I have been looking back through past issues of Paris Vogue, where their work features heavily and this editorial captured me. I love the sculptural shapes of the models, the beach backdrop almost rendered useless as if it is artificial, and the eye popping colour. Well, these things and the fact they're just darn pretty images to look at.

I will be trotting off to Smiths later to actually buy the mag and have a proper read of the interview.

Orange Celine Flap Bag

Simplicity itself.

English Eccentrics

Um, I think I was channeling Helena Bonham Carter yesterday. That's all I can say in my defence. I bought these jeans for £5 in the Topshop sale and I love the bronze studs all over them, but if I pair them with black I look like the biggest rock wannabe loser of all time (I lack the attitude, I mean I get stressed about missing my train or not getting the magazine in Sunday papers). So I thought I'd try some florals, and then re-discovered some brogues I'd forgotten about, and all of a sudden I'm dressed like a nutter. I have a long history of crazy outfits - from my teenage ties / shirts / tartan trouser combo following The Levellers around, to my "Hungarian lesbian peasant" look at college, a term my Mother coined. Isn't she tres charmante?

The Dog Days Are Over

Well, I say this...sadly my dog days haven't even started. I have never, ever owned a dog. Only cats. And killer gerbils. Perhaps the odd orphaned pigeon we kept in a box.

But tell me. How could these faces NOT make your day better?

I have to make do with this...hmpf

I tend to save cute animal pictures all of the time and don't always make a note of where they are from. If the image is yours and you want it taken down just ask.

H&M Halloween Jewellery Haul

Excuse the crappy iPhone pics, but the excitement of finding jewellery from H&M that was not only cheap but perfect for Halloween was too much for me. I have been playing with it all weekend....

I often find H&M clothes (whilst bargainiferous and often on trend) too cheap to stomach. The knitwear rarely lasts a season and some of the fabrics make me shudder, but I guess you get what you pay for. The accessories are a different kettle of fish all together and the design team are on fire at the moment...tote bags shaped like a penguin! Sequin masks! Pastel purple floral tights! And these pieces of loveliness that together amounted to the vast sum of about 12 quid...
